I must say that I have neglected my lovely Flats&Fraps readers!! Trust me, it was never intentional. With the year kicking off and me finding it hard to balance an overbearing workload, it became impossible to fit blogging in (ugh). My sincerest apologies. Now that second semester is off to a relaxing (and less stressful) start, I vow to make time to keep the site up and running.

With my apology under wing and a promise to get back in the swing of things, theres also a new direction i plan to take with Flats and Frapps. As a college student, you are frequently asked "what are your career plans upon graduation?". Trust me, I've gotten this questions just as many times as you have. While it can be a drag, it's an honest question that deserves an honest answer. Besides indulging in MAC products and finding the right pair of jeans, academically I have a passion for writing and Marketing. As a combination of the two, my career goal is to start a magazine for young women between the ages of 18 - 25. Pretty critical years in your life as a young woman, dont ya think? So much changes and shapes you as a person throughout these years, and sometimes you just need a little guidance or a little influence.

With so many blogs focusing on fashion alone, I created this blog not just for fashion, but for the interests and passions of the average girl. We cry, we laugh out loud, and we love hard. Right ladies? Theres more to us than the stiletto's on our feet and the celebrity gossip thats fed to us daily. I admit, that somehow I was sucked into the mainstream blogging world and started posting more and more entries on fashion.

So, let's start off on a better foot this time around shall we. Let's be unique, Let's be Flats & Frapps. :-)

Best Friends. . . Forever?

All too often, groups and pairs of friends begin to disconnect and take different paths. From parting ways for college, overbearing workloads, obsessive boyfriends and cat fights, there's always a hurdle in the female friendship.

Take Iyanna for instance. . .

Freshman year of college, no friends and a new campus. Finally identifying with another female on campus was not only an uplift but a brand new experience unto itself. She had male friends, ONLY. From shopping to outings, she was the leading lady. Having female friends was seemingly a stretch because her trust was hard to come by and her instant prejudgement came naturally. The typical 'all girls are 'catty' type. Becoming best friends with another girl on campus proved to be an ultimate freshman experience, from the clubs to the bar to on campus events. Three's a crowd, but two worked perfectly for them. Sophomore year rolls around and housing assignments change a bit. Iyanna rooms with six other girls, one of which not her freshman BFF. All by choice, all agreed and all understood. But when roommate bonding becomes a priority, her freshman bff becomes an 'option', so she assumes. Why do girls always become jealous when their original BFF branches off and attempts to add to the group? Is it because they choose not to share the attention? Because they feel they could be easily replaced? Or do they become materialistically jealous of the new found member? Have you had this problem? How do you solve the situation? Or does the situation solve itself?

And then, there's Jordan. . .

From childhood to young adulthood, her circle of friends evolved into a sisterhood. No need for the additional side friendships, they were each others backbones and were perfectly content with just the six of the them. From toothaches to heartaches they argued, fought and cried it out until the problem ceased to exist. Then they fell in love. With the new boyfriend always comes the friend who envy's, the overprotective cousin, and the blinded by love fictional 'princess' of the bunch. Losing one and adopting another man is not an easy adjustment for the other five, but hey they all manage to let is pass, right? Wrong. Being the friend who is the most loving, accepting, giving, and most judgemental all in one package, it was Jordan's turn to fall for a man. Not just any man, but one that evolved from a friend, to a brother, to an interest. As the other five encouraged her to woo him with her 'sweetheart' persona, the only barrier and hurdle was his unavailability. So, maybe he was talking to someone, but shes not a close friend and technically they're not together, right? Sort of. With a year rolling by, emotions and such a strong connection fluctuating from one really good day, to a really 'slap in the face day', it was time for it all to hit the fan. And when it did, girl did it hit hard. It was like a ten-way war between texting, instant messaging, facebook, phone calls, and emails of conversations being forwarded. Everyone had something to say and everyone was talking. In the end, friendships were lost, grudges were held and the only two who stood and stood together, were Jordan and the guy. After a long fought battle with delayed gratification why let go of all you've ever wanted to make your friends happy? Besides they're in love and happy and at one point you thought they could and should do better. 27 days later, her call log and text inbox has been hypnotized by his charming 'good mornings' and mushy 'i miss you's'. In the end, the sisterhood still stands, but their approval of the guy is still in the air. Ever been in love? Love that can finally be embraced after fighting against the odds - your best friends?

Meet Gabrielle. . .

Turning to your best friends is always a girls first and last resort. For the most part, they're not afraid to get down and dirty with tears, smeared eye liner and tissues. They immediately respond to the 'i need you now' text and they generally tell you what you want to hear. Sometimes, however, you just need a guys P.O.V. Every girl has a big brother, from birth or an 'adopted' older brother, there's always that one guy you can turn to. Dishing on the goods about your new guys is exciting for you, your bursting with smiles and skipping words just to get everything that happened on your first date out in one breath. For you it's sunny side up, then comes the rain. Big brother doesn't approve. He says 'He's a basketball player. . .You're not the only girl he talks to. . . you deserve better. . . there's just something about him. . .I'm disappointed'. Those last words feel like a thorn stinging her in the spine. Out of all of the emotions her story could possibly stir up in big brother's head, did disappoint have to be it? The only one that would make her re-analyze the date and consider ditching the 'player'. It sucks when you feel like your smile is truly genuine and one of your biggest comforts makes you uncomfortable. What then? Do you take his words so literal and miss out on the guy to erase big brothers disappoint? Or do you let him know where you hide the key to your heart is solely based on your comfort, and his support is all you wanted out of the chitchat? Have you ever been in such a catch?

Hair Care is Health Care

How often should I grease my scalp? Is it really necessary to see my hairdresser every two weeks? Whats better, a texturizer or a relaxer? Is mixing a relaxer at home just as good as the products used in the salon?

I bet these are all questions on top of your mind when you're in the hair care aisle at your local CVS or Walgreen's or when chatting it up with your girlfriends over lunch. As with all hygiene care, there's always myths swirling inside and outside the salon. Lucky for the F&F readers, Mrs. K of Hairs Kay, clears it up for all the sisters desiring healthy locks.

Myth: My hairdresser tells me to grease my scalp often because my scalp tends to dry up.

False: Mrs. K says that greasing your scalp clogs your pores. By eating healthy and drinking plenty of water, your hair hydrates itself without the dependency of dandruff shampoos and hair grease.

Concern: Even with the proper hydration my scalp is still dry and itchy.

Mrs K.: Dry and itchy scalp can be the result of a hormonal imbalance, stress, or medication. Birth control is considered a medication btw.

Myth: My hairdresser tells me to come to the salon for a wash every two weeks.

False: Mrs. K says reminds us that our scalp is an extension of our skin. If we bathe daily, we should be washing our hair more frequently as well. A wash every week and eating properly will keep your hair in good shape.

Concern: I am a college student, and going to the salon weekly can become expensive. However, while doing my hair on my own i use a blow dryer and a flat iron which dries my hair out. What should i do?

Mrs. K. recommends that when using heating products such as a flat iron, to use a ceramic product. Brands such as Golden Hot will only damage your hair. To avoid applying such heat to your locks, try towel drying your hair and letting it air dry naturally before flat ironing it straight. Also, try to use the same products you use in the salon so that your hair care treatment remains consistent. Every woman should know what products are being used on their hair when going to salon.

Concern: What can I do to keep my hair healthy?

Mrs K has a salon policy of no chips or soda. Drinking caffeine and eating chips have a lot of salt which contributes the build up and clogging of the pores in your scalp. By eating fruits and vegetables, drinking plenty of water, and using the bathroom after each meal, it allows you to have a clean beautiful scalp.

Concern: Should I untangle my hair or improve the conditions of my hair prior to my salon visit?

Mrs. K says absolutely NOT!! Brushing your hair causes discomfort because the bristles irritate your scalp. Also refrain from putting you hair in tight ponytails on the day of your appointment. Simply allow you hair enough time to breath prior to your salon visit.

Preference: Relaxer or Texturizer?

Concern: I do not go to the salon anymore because i feel it is cheaper to do it in my own home. Are there any risks doing my hair without the provision of a professional?

Mrs. K. replies absolutely!! Never do your own relaxer. There may be trace elements left in your hair after being applied. Another person has an overview of your head where they can assure that everything is properly rinsed out. It also allows them to time and monitor your hairs reaction to the chemicals. Also, with allowing someone at home to apply your relaxer do not use mixers!! Mixers are calcium based which makes the hair and scalp hard.

Since I've been gone, the promo photos that are making a hit have been just my taste and just my style. And of course, they have been the women who have graced F&F on numerous occasions. You may have seen them, but if you haven't Ms.Elise has got you covered.

Taking it up a notch, Rihanna continues to give off edge and sex appeal. . .

. . . in her new dark and dramatic shots. Her next album is said to be taking the Caribbean songstress to even higher levels than 'Good Girl Gone Bad'. I'm excited for a couple of tracks to hit the mainstream but I'm more so excited about the fashion picks she'll be rocking in upcoming paparazzi shots. ; ). But that's just me!

The boosters and the hustlers bargain with prices to get every female trotting the streets to pick up an "authentic" designer bag for less. However, when the police come patrolling through, how quickly they pack up and wheel out giving you the wrong change? Ring too many bells? Well, while it is evidently unethical and illegal, just who's actually doing something about it? Harper's Bazaar has an ongoing campaign 'Fakes Are Never In Fashion' to help do something about the counterfeit handbags and designer items being produced and sold today.

BUYER BEWARE

Spotting a knock-off is more difficult than you may think. Use the tips below as a checklist to avoid buying a fake.

1. Location, Location, Location. First and foremost, purchasing luxury goods at a brand’s boutique, website or authorized dealer is your best bet to insure buying a genuine product. Items at flea markets, home parties, from street vendors, or unauthorized websites are likely to be fake.

2. The Price is RightQuality and exclusivity account for the high price of luxury goods. Thus, if the price seems too good to be true, it probably is.

3. Construction SitesCraftsmanship is a main point of distinction with luxury goods. Sloppy stitches in less visible areas—such as the underside of a product or inside pockets—is likely the result of counterfeit production.

4. Package DealLuxury retailers meticulously package their products, including tissue paper, authenticity cards, product care information, superior quality boxes, and shopping bags. If you see a plastic wrap covering or a flimsy dust bag, it's probably a fake. For example, counterfeit manufacturers will often wrap the handles of handbags in plastic.

Hey fabulous readers!

So this morning is my last morning in the office. Sad, I know. But, I am saying Bye-Bye to Brooklyn and Hello Boston. With that being said, I probably wont get around to posting until about the middle of next week. I'll be moving from here, to Boston, then back to CT Tuesday to school. I enjoyed my summer and my internship here and I have lots to blog about. Look out for my last 'NYC Experience' post that will catch you guys up on all the fun I've had.

Vaseline is a miracle drug!

"Vaseline is your best friend. Vaseline is a great, cheap eye makeup remover. It's also great for fixing chapped, scaly lips. Slather on a bunch of Vaseline, then use a toothbrush to massage lips. Wipe the excess off on a tissue. Your lips will be smooth and soft." - Julyne Derrick

My personal favorite use.

When you spend the night out and do not have your makeup essentials to do the works, what's in your handbag will do just fine. Take out the MAC khol liner I recommended ya. By simply tracing your bottom lid and lining the top lid, youre almost there. Next, dab your hand in vaseline and lightly smear it on your eye lids above the liner. It gives off the shimmery/ glossy look a creme or matte shadow would. Next take the same finger and rub it across your lashes. It also makes the lashes stand out and makes them appear longer. Trust me, it works. Plus, its cheap, quick, and easy. - Yours truly.

I actually like Disney Movies. Still a kid at heart. You know you have your kid moments. Laughing with the girls will never get old, so watching the Cheetah Girls as cheesy as their lines and songs get, it always a smile creator.

The thirds set to premiere 8/22

Synopsis: Chanel (Adrian Balion), Dorinda (Sabrina Bryan), and Aqua (Keily Williams) are back in the trequal of "The Cheetah Girls." In this film, the girls get cast in a Bollywood movie while Galleria is at college in England, so the girls travel to India. Once they're there, they find out that director wants one of the girls to be casted in the Bollywood movie. The girls have to figure out if they are sticking it together, or go alone.

Not To Mention My Obsession. . . Which airs for the 11th season on 9/3!

All too often women tote around the over sized yet fashionable big black handbag. You know you have yours. I admit I can't leave the house without my black Juicy Couture Day Dreamer Velour Tote. Like most, it's generally congested (yes, congested) with multiples of one product, old receipts, crumbs, change, and hair pins. Sound similar to your daily disaster? When it's time to check out at the register it takes minutes on top of minutes to scramble through it looking for your debit card or the exact change, or even worse, finding your subway card when you hear the train pulling up to the platform. To all my bag ladies, this is holding you up and slowing you down. As an on-the-go girl things have to be at better access than it's been thus far and I'm here to help solve the baggage blockage with a bundle of necessities. Note: Need only one of each. Refill when necessary, not just to swallow space. So without further or do, for the excessive clutter mayhem I give you 'a girls guide to light weight toting'.

The Essentials:

1. Hand Lotion - With all outings, washing your hands is a must and they will get dry following the bathroom visit. (Aveda Hand Lotion is a great product). 2. Mints - After/Prior to dinner a tooth brush is not accessible and gum will only make you hungrier. Pop one of these in. 3. Hand Sanitizer - After riding the subway, being outside, and shaking people's hands your hands are congested with germs, so just to be on the safe side use a dab. 4. Sidekick LX -or any cellular device. A girl can't function without her connection to her besties. 5. Debit Cards- Depending on where you're headed carrying around a wad of money can be all too dangerous. Keep it quick and easy with at debit in hand. 6. Dove Cool Essentials Deodorant - Definitely the best deodorant around (let me just put that out there). Raising your arm on the subway or while dancing crazily would not possible, better yet comfortable, for you or those surrounding you without sweat guard. 7. Feminine Wipes - You never know when the dinner can lead to a night cap. After dancing and sweating the night away, hygiene may not be on point. Take a quick steal to the bathroom and freshen up (Try Summer's Eve Cleansing Cloths). 8. Mirror - Looking your best is of high importance. You don't want lunch stuck in your teeth now do you ladies? 9. Lip gloss - Is yours poppin'? Have the right gloss from the splurge worthy ones to the drugstore favorites. Only one is necessary and just to be a little lenient having a chap stick or lip balm as backup is acceptable seeing as reapplying gloss at 2am is a sticky situation. Also guys for some reason cant get with the gloss.( Try L'Oreal Colour Juice) 10. Eye Pencil - As the evening hours start to roll around, your day time makeup is just that day wear. To add a little edge have a pencil at hand. Also when it starts to run and smudge beneath the eye giving you the 'black eye' appeal, it's a vivid warning to retrace the lower lid ( I adore MAC Kohl Liner). 11. Cash- Ladies, if you're on a date be on the safe side and have enough to cover your meal in case you have to walk out on a cheap brotha' and leave him to wash the dishes in the back. You're way too fly. Also in case of an emergency cab trip or dead phone battery have singles and change. 12. Body Spray - After the perfume wears off, reapplying the fragrance can be a bit too strong and ultimately lure in the unwanted nightlife bugs. Body Spray is light and feminine (I love Pearberry from Bath&Body Works). 12. Wallet - Lastly, have a wallet. With your I.D's, Cash, and Debit needed don't let them float around and add to the unwanted clutter. Do a little organization within organization by having a wallet handy (My favorite are from Nine West. The Zebra Print is my next steal!).

The Extra Essentials:

Yes, there are a few exceptions:

1. Condoms - Especially for college students and the single sass. Having your own condoms guarantees safety. Your body is a temple and by no means do you want pregnancy, STD's, or HIV to intrude upon it. As my cousin wisely told me prior to entering the college world 'you never know when something's going to pop off'. Safe Sex 2. Keys - Getting locked out after drinking, partying, and sore feet, the last thing you want is to be stranded on the front porch or lawn. 3. Ipod - Music is my life and without it, the long bus rides from school and the paper marathons wouldn't be possible. I understand if your tunes are tugging at your leg and must accompany every trip. 4. Medication - From birth control, to allergy pills, over-the-counter and more serious medications, your health is number one. 5. Tampons/Pads/Panty Liners - Aunt Flo came for a visit at the worst time possible? Let's not leave the room with a grand exit. Better safe than sorry girls.

My excitement, sitting on the edge of my seat, anticipating Neyo's 'Year of The Gentleman', was heightened even more after getting word on his upcoming video for 'Miss Independent'. Don't you just feel like that song is speaking directly to you? Well if the lyrics and suave vocals aren't enough to woo you, wait til' you see the official video that's set to premiere. Gabrielle Union, Keri Hilson, Lauren London and the eye candy that is Trey Songz are all set to make cameos in the video. Talk about an array of fabulosity at it's best. Try taking that all in in one breath. Well, I don't know about you, but I can't wait to see the vid. It's bound to make the countdown and I'll be sure to cast my vote for it. Teen Vogue Update

So guys, as you know almost a month ago I went up to the Conde Nast offices for an interview with the beauty director, Eva Chen, at Teen Vogue. Although it was an informative interview I was able to also interview with the beauty assistant, Maura Lynch, for a shot at becoming their Fall 2008 Beauty Intern! The interview went great as I relayed to you fab readers in a previous post, but my only assignment was to find out if my university would allow me to receive college credit and whether or not taking the internship would be possible. Bummer. After sending a bundle of emails to my advisor, career services, and the dean of academic affairs, they pushed for me to be able to take the golden opportunity, BUT I would have to quickly find a NYC community college to take only ONE class for credit (leaving me three classes behind) and I would have to find housing. Sucks huh? Unbearably too much to accomplish in the matter of two weeks. So I did what I could and emailed the ladies letting them know I would receive credit but as for my hours availability, I wasn't too certain. In the end, they could not give me the internship for the fall due to the scheduling issues, BUT, on the bright side, they want me to come and work for their office for the Summer!!! Works even better for me! Now I wont be behind in schooling and I will have another summer in the city! Thanks for the support. Best readers around! ; )

Light Skinned Blacks vs. Dark Skinned Blacks

So, I was watching a re-run of the Tyra Show last night and it was on the taboo topic of Light Skinned Blacks vs. Dark Skinned blacks. When discussing the subject, she had the audience determine who fell under which skin complexion, what women felt about their skin color versus that of someone who is lighter or darker, and lastly what men felt about skin color when choosing the women they date. As a young black woman, this topic is a situation that we confront daily and often times it creates prejudice within the black community. One woman on the show who was of a lighter skinned complexion looked foolish as she degraded darker skinned women by considering herself superior and by disallowing her 12 year old son to bring home a dark skinned girlfriend. Sounds preposterous huh? Well, it's true and it's happening in our society today. As a dark skinned woman I will say that 'Black is Beautiful' period. Regardless of the shade, we are all one people. Dark skinned women have taken the fall while light skinned women have reaped benefits in other areas such as entertainment, magazine covers, and shows. Many seek the light complexion, long hair, and hazel eyes, without realizing that dark women too can have long hair without the aid of extensions. While Hazel eyes are not so common, a black woman with brown eyes can be just as beautiful. I have friends that vary in skin color and I have noticed a trend where groups of guys notice us due to my lighter skinned friends first. Has this ever occurred in your group of friends?

On the show, Whitney of 'America's Next Top Model' mentioned when guys approach her they will comment ' Your bad for a dark skinned girl'. What's that supposed to mean? I can relate all too well when I've had guys, even male friends, make the same comment. While I may brush it off with a thank you and a smile, it is wrong and meaningless. I, too, play a part by allowing them to sway me to feel as if they just said something positive, when in all actuality they are downplaying ethnic women. As equally interesting, when the men were asked who they approach the darks stuck with the darks and the lights stuck with the lights. Surprising? Yes and No, I'm of two minds. Some choose to stick with what they know because physically it looks better. Others choose to branch off to their opposite because of their taste preference as well as silly reasons such as the predicted color of their offspring's. For personal testimony, my cousin and I are opposites in complexion. I'm of darker skin and she is much lighter than I. However, she tends to date darker guys and I somehow end up with lighter guys. Pure coincidence, no such preference. My friends always joke around when I tell them I've met someone new by responding 'He's light skinned, ain't he?'. Surely enough, he usually is, but not by choice per say. I'm not the bold type, so I rarely approach men, they generally approach me. So the guys that do approach me more often are lighter skinned guys. I can remember a time when I was talking to a guy and I was supposed to head back over to his house. Instead of telling me to head over, he instead responded 'my sister's home'. What that had to do with me coming baffled me, but I let him go on. 'She and her friends are here and they're clowns. They're gonna say 'Oh she's too dark . . .'. Was I hurt? Taken aback? Hell yea. But did I say anything? No.

It's happening Ladies, and it's not so much a new thing, it's an ongoing historical thing amongst African Americans. The women who columned in Essence weren't afraid to confront the issue and Tyra wasn't afraid to bring it out on her show. As her little protege (he he), I wanted to put it in the air as well. So tell me ladies, have you ever faced the light skinned versus dark skinned issue?

I'm excited to reveal that the beautiful black faces you've seen bless the pages of the July Issue of Italian Vogue will make guest appearances on an upcoming episode of the Tyra Banks Show. Yay! I know some of you may dismiss Tyra's show and say that she tries to hard, but I honestly love the show and watch it as faithfully as I can. Tyra has definitely adjusted to the hosting role and her show is much more personable and fun to watch, not to mention the chick is fierce and she has a way of rubbing off positively on her audience, viewers, and guests. With Fall semester rolling around, music is what truly gets me through my classes and papers. Unfortunately my Ipod was stolen and I have yet to buy a new one. So, until them I'll purchase cd's. And I must say I have more than a handful that I can't wait to buy. With all of the released promo shots of these celebs, and upcoming albums, these artists are truly doing their thing and I have yet to frown when hearing their leaked tracks.

Keri Hilson.

This new edgy girl-next-door is hitting the scene by storm and shes taking it all in with more than one direction. Not only is her music inspiring and relevant to the emotional being of women, but her fashion sense is on the rise as well. As a product of Timbaland, you can expect a great beat, and with amazing vocals to match, her album is sure to sell. Her video for 'Energy' and her guest host appearance on 106th caught my attention. September 23rd be sure to cop her album.

Jennifer Hudson.

Jennifer Hudson first made a name for herself on American Idol and continued her celebrity with a role in 'Dream Girls'. With powerhouse vocals and a curvacious physique, J.H has become a role model for black women. As she continues her time in the 'Spotlight', her album release is well overdue. I have been patiently waiting to hear a record from Jennifer and finally she dropped 'Spotlight'. I love it. It is definitely an anthem for women that is sung at the top of your lungs in and around the house. Her promo pics are just as stunning and J.H has been ditching the pounds. I do, however, hope that she sticks to her curves. It's a good look for her and I dont think shedding too much weight will be flattering for her. She is currently gracing the cover of Upscale Magazine so pick up a copy if you want to hear more about her anticipated album release. Rumor has it she's dating 'Punk' from 'I Love New York 2', but she has yet to confirm/deny such rumors. Look out for her album which is said to be released September 30th under the Arista Records label.

Ciara.

Ciara has been missing in action and I have to say I have missed her. I enjoyed both of her albums and am still anticipating her third album drop. After taking a mini music break, she has begun to pop back on the music scene featured in 'Stepped on My J'z', a performance with Chris Brown on the '2008 BET Awards' as well as talk about a modeling gig with Victoria's Secret, spokesmodel for the 'Secret Obsession' fragrance, and an acting role in 'Mama, I want to sing'. Talk about a come back, huh? The film is an on screen rendition of the stage play 'Mama I Want to Sing'. Ciara co-stars aside Lynn Whitfield, her mother in the play, and Hill Harper. Her album is set to release in September under Jive Records

Lloyd.

Lloyd's sweet and sexy vocals are bound to lure you in with his third album release ' Lessons in Love'. With some of my favorite hits like 'South Side', 'You', 'Players Prayer' and 'Certified', this young man is well on his way to keeping the ladies on their toes and giving guys an easy way to get back in his ladies good grace. As Lloyd has successfully aimed to pleased with both 'Street Love' and 'Certified', he is unmistakably set to keep it up with a more mature and suave 'Lessons in Love'. With one debut single from the album 'Girls Around The World' hitting the countdown there is only more hits to come. His album dropped August 5th, so there's one back to school album you can go out and check off your list.

Neyo.

Neyo, Neyo, Neyo. Singer, Producer, Writer, Actor, Performer. Is there anything he can't do? Not only has he produced some of the hottest records for himself such as 'So Sick', 'Sexy Love', 'Do You', 'Go On Girl', 'Closer', and 'Miss Independent', he has also put his touch on hit records of other industry mates. Neyo has a record for every occurrence in life and i must admit his lyrics illustrated my AIM away message too many times to count. With 'Year of the Gentleman' set to drop September 16th, I'm setting the bar beyong high for this unique and creative vocalist. He truly puts on and produces good music. My Ipod is a must for this album, so it looks like i have to get to Apple, quick.

Solange.

Solo has been doing her best to make a statement, and that is, shes her own person. Many readily make comparisons between her and her diva sister Beyonce, but she's more than just the kid sister, shes a young woman and she's making that known now more than ever. She spoke with Parlour Magazine in an interview. . .

P: Do you think people will get your music?

S: I have never felt at home in one demographic. That’s my struggle with management and my label, getting everyone to identify that just because I’m African-American, that doesn’t mean that I’m an urban artist. I make music for people that have a sophisticated ear and are brave enough to support something non-traditional. People complain about the state of music, but there are alot of diverse and talented artists with people that support them. But their fans aren’t the ones calling the radio station, they just want to see a good show. So I said, we should just do a tour and all of the artists that are going to be a part of it will have the same voice and stance on music. So, we, Janelle Monae, Chester French, the Knux and I, got all of our managers on the phone and started making a tour happen. “It’s a movie called ‘The Heist’ that I’m doing with T.I., Idris Elba and Matt Dillon. I’m playing a killer. I’m not going to give anything else away! It’s a bank-robbing movie, so it’s one of those action-packed films. You get a little different side of me in that movie [...] At the end of the day, I’m going to focus on my music first. As a fan and admirer of every 'Eva' you can name (Eva Mercier, Eva Longoria, Eva Mendes) it should be of no surprise that personally I do not find either one of their ads beyond racy. These women are being bold and they are trying something new, while still preserving a level of sophisticated sexy.

Eva Mercier did surprise me when the photo surfed the net because I didnt expect to stumble across such a promo shot. None the less, she still is strikingly fierce and the photo is edgy, high fashion and acceptable in my books. As many models opt for the same look but commonly decorated in paint or leaves, Eva donned the same shot but wore only her confidence. Confidence is the best accessory and I say she wore it well.

The cuban actress whom I featured in a previous post, Eva Mendes, looks just as classy in her new ads for Calvin Klein. Despite the trashy titles other women receive upon posing in the nude, Eva Mendes has a certain light that shines and casts her as different from others. Her photos are beautiful and shes one of a handful that can pose in the nude and still be admired for her beauty

Rihanna!

Tyra needs to have her on the show with a podium and an award because Rihanna truly has the industry and the fashion game in a headlock. A Weekend of Tears

In the matter of one short weekend, we have lost not one, but two of the greatest and most talented African Americans in the entertainment industry.

Bernie Mac
Bernie Mac was pronounced dead at 50 years old early Saturday Morning due to the complications of a pneumonia. With previous complications from sarcoidosis, inflammatory disease of the lungs, family announced to People.com that "his immune system was compromised. He had an infection ... He was on a new medication that suppresses the immune system, and that's where the pneumonia came from". Terrible loss. Mr. Mac’s funeral arrangements are scheduled for Saturday, August 16th, at an undisclosed location. By the request of the family, all donations can be made to the Bernie Mac Foundation for Sarcoidosis, 40 E. Ninth St., Suite 601, Chicago IL 60605.

A few of his celeb friends released statements as well:

Brad Pitt: "I lament the loss of a ferociously funny and hardcore family man. My thoughts are with [his wife] Rhonda and their family. Bernie Mac, you are already missed."

George Clooney: "The world just got a little less funny. He will be dearly missed."

Chris Rock: "Bernie Mac was one of the best and funniest comedians to ever live, but that was the second best thing he did. Bernie was one of the greatest friends a person could have. Losing him is like losing 12 people because he absolutely filled up any room he was in. I'm gonna miss the Mac Man."

Cedric the Entertainer: "It's hard to put into words just how I feel and what a painful loss this is. Bernie was a brother, a friend and one of the comic masters of our time. Samuel L. Jackson, Mac's costar in the November 2008 flick Soul Men: "It goes without saying that Bernie was one of the preeminent comedians of our generation. He was also an attentive husband, a great father and loving grandfather. I feel blessed to have shared years of friendship with Bernie Mac and I'm honored to have finally costarred with him in what I consider to be his finest cinematic acting achievement. Issac Hayes

Issac Hayes, legendary soul crooner, was pronounced dead at 2:10 pm on August 10th in Memphis, TN, after what is believed to be of natural causes due to working out. The 65-year old Rock & Roll Hall of famer was found lying unconscious next to a running treadmill. While the family has released news that the soul music pioneer suffered a mild stroke in Jan. of 06' due to exhaustion, they believe his passing may have something to do with his history of high blood pressure. Hayes leaves behind 12 children, 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

And as if both of their passing isn't already too much to fathom, both men were co-stars in their movie Soul Men which also stars Samuel L. Jackson. According to theybf.com as well as cinemablend.com:

The film stars Samuel L. Jackson, Bernie Mac, and yes, the recently late, great Isaac Hayes in the story of two estranged soul legends (played by Jackson and Mac) who reunite at the Apollo Theater to honor their recently deceased band leader. Principle photography was already finished, so there should be no problem with getting it ready for release, but you have to wonder now whether or not Dimension Films will want to release it. Death is a big subject in the film. The entire plot of the movie revolves around Mac and Jackson eulogizing the death of their friend with music, only now two members of the film’s actual cast really are dead. Three days ago it sounded like a fantastic idea for a film, especially in light of the way Sam Jackson belted out blues tunes in Black Snake Moan. Now, it seems almost too sad to watch. Buying a ticket to Soul Men could end up feeling like you’re purchasing a seat at someone’s funeral.

WoW. Can only imagine the statement that will be released from Samuel L. Jackson now, after not one but both of his co-stars have left him. It kind of reminds me of Aaliyah's passing and the 'Rock the Boat Video' and how she floats to the top at the end of the video. Remember?

September 08' is when The Drama Begins.

Just when I was fascinated by Kim K's lashes, Shu Uemura opened my eyes to a whole new dramatic world of falsies. While taking false lashes to a new direction, the collection is reaching new heights in craft and creativity with their upcoming Tokyo Lash Bar 2008 collection. Teaming up with Victor & Rolf, two fashion giants in the ever changing fashion community, they are set to release this unbelievably extravagant collection of false eyes lashes in September 2008. Is anyone else fascinated by these high fashion lashes? I'm speechless. In about one month I will be $95 short in my wallet because I am getting my hands on at least one pair. Between Halloween and a Masquerade ball, I will find an event to display them.

Celeb Ladies Are Taking The Short Cut

As a fan and follower of the bob trend, chopping a couple inches off was no biggie and I was excited about the transition. With a thick texture to my hair, my bob was nice and full and I had no regrets after. I think it suits a lot of women, ranging in ages and head shape. But, there are a few women who have jumped on the bandwagon and I scream 'why?' when I saw them. Not because the look wasn't for them because they are all still stunning, but because with beautiful hair such as theirs I'd feel so blessed.

My biggest upset:

Tia Mowry

Why Tia? Since the Sister-Sister days I was always jealous of the twins' hair. While I put pom-poms in my hair playing dress up, these girls had all I ever wanted. Maybe she was going for a more mature look? Still beautiful none the less, but I'm disappointed the trend got to her. Long hair is not extinct. It will never go out of a style. To me, a bob can.

With her first lengthy bob, I thought the look was very sophisticated and cute. Fit her well and I gave it a thumbs up. But once she allowed her hubby, Tony Parker, to become scissor happy, i stuck my thumb in my mouth. The look screams 'soccer mom' to me on her. Agree? Maybe it's the part on the side. I think she should have stuck with her length.

And Now Selita Ebanks:

Blissfully, we had an ebony beauty strutting her stuff and posing to perfect for Victoria's Secret. Beautiful skin, charming smile, and fabulous length. Now, she's displayed her new look. And again, with such beauty, versatility is amazing. She can make any style look good. I did, however, enjoying seeing an ethnic woman with long hair blowing like the blonde's.

Man, who's next. Wondering what's next for me? Fall semesters around the corner, and I'm ready to tweak the do. Without further or do, meet my new hair styling diva Keri Hilson.

One of the first in the limelight to successfully keep their relationship hush while concealing their private love life, Jay-Z and Beyonce are sought after more and more each day. From quick cute outings to performances and shopping, there's always something stirring up and gossiped about the two. While I do not promote gossip on F&F, both issues relate to my frequenting Ad posts and Magazine obsession.

Beyonce's newly released L'Oréal Paris Feria Hair Color campaign is stirring up controversy after she appears to be lightened and touched up. Although I refrain from skepticism I myself see the difference between this ad and others she appears in. However, in the industry this is all too common. J-Lo has appeared lighter in ads, as well as Halle Berry,Vanessa Williams, and Rihanna. Beyonce, who is a serious icon and role model for young girls however is walking on eggshells with this one. The ad is set to appear in upcoming issues of Elle, Allure, and Essence Magazine.

Denying all claims and false accusations, L'Oréal Paris' states:

"Beyoncé Knowles has been a spokesperson for the L'Oréal Paris brand since 2001.We highly value our relationship with Ms. Knowles. It is categorically untrue that L'Oréal Paris altered Ms. Knowles' features or skin-tone in the campaign for Feria's hair color." source: E!online

And her busy beau takes claim of the throne as King of Vibe's 15th Anniversary Juice Issue.

The more I see Kelly, the more I want to be Kelly. Period. From standing in what many considered to be the shadow and backdrop of Beyonce's stardom, Kelly Rowland sets herself apart from her band member flawlessly, fabulously and of course, fashionably. Not to mention she is in the works of making moves for herself, starting with her trips to Africa and London, to her new lifestyle and travel show which is rumored to have began taping back in May. The show entitled 'Around the World' is described as a modern and trendier version of 'Rich & Famous' and will feature specials on restaurants, luxury hotels, the place to be for the hottest parties, and more. Oprah's OWN, Style Network, and Bravo have been looking into the show. Hopefully one of them picks up the show for the 08-09 season. She told ya'll she was gonna bump like this.

First Black Disney Princess!!

This may sound cheesy, but I am over-board excited about the Christmas 09' premiere of 'The Princess and the Frog'. Finally, Disney has created a film with a black girl as the main character. When I was a kid I dreamed of this day, but trust and believe I will be there the night it debuts watching it with or without a kid. The story is centered around a young girl named Tiana and the setting takes place in New Orleans.

It's Never Too Late To Make A Comeback

After depressing reviews for 'The Love Guru' (although she escaped direct criticism), Meagan Good is getting back on her feet with three movies lined up with hopes of more promising reviews. In the near future, the actress plays a role in 'Saw V' which is set to hit theaters Halloween of this year, 'Caramel', and 'The Unborn' (2009). While, I may have an on-again-off-again fan relationship with the actress, I'm always open to see what she has to offer. Horror Movie? I didn't really like her role in 'One Missed Call' but we'll see soon enough.

We have three influential African American women from all different professions gracing the covers of current famed magazine issues.

First up, the sophisticated girl-next-door edgy Keri Hilson. . .. . .who makes an appearance in the latest issue of Trace Magazine in their 'Black Girls Rule!' issue. As early as it is, I admire Ms. Hilson, her fashion sense, personality, and her new video for 'Energy'. Haven't seen it? Go check it out! From the concept to the wardrobe and acting, it's a favorite already.

Second, the fierce Tyre Banks in this month's issue of Harper's Bazaar. . .

In the issue Tyra pays homage to Michelle Obama as she role plays and poses as the First Lady. In the spread she reveals her beliefs and ideas as a model citizen, the fierceness of Abigail Adams, her admiration and fascination with Michelle Obama, and the affect a black president would have on kids today.

Wanna Be On Top?

The time has come yet again for another season of 'America's Next Top Model'. While many criticize the creator of 'fierce', I think the show is still a Wednesday night must-see and her talk show, yep, I watch it. Season 11 kicks off September 3rd and I will be right there starry-eyed watching the premiere. With such a festive advertisement, I'm exciting to see what Tyra and the panel has in store for the new round of hopefuls. Maybe my application will be sumbitted for season 13. ; )

Fab Ad Campaigns

Instilled within my obsession with magazines, lies my fascination with catchy ad campaigns printed inside. With the familiar celebrity faces, haute fashion lines, and dolled up makeup, fashion ads are becoming as catchy, creative, and cute as watching the commercials during the Superbowl.

For instance one of my future faves. . .

Eva Longoria's ad's for Bebe's Fall 2008 Sports Collection. Between the adorable pups, the pink grand doors and the dress & jacket combo, I'm loving this ad entirely. Here's a glimpse at more:

She has teamed up with Giorgio Armani becoming a new Armani Jeans Ambassador. As a part of the deal, Solo has to wear the jeans while promotiong her album during her Euro promo tour.

The Princess of the Game is Back!!

This month, you can find the Princess of Hip Hop & R&B, Ashanti, making an appearance on the cover of Page Six Magazine. As a Grammy award winner with 14 hits and an actress, Ashanti was involuntarily missing in action for three and a half years after going on what seemed to be a music hiatus. Wondering why? With the indictment of Irv Gotti, CEO of Murder Inc., due to money laundering, all artists and albums were put on hold until all accusations were cleared. Due to her affiliation with the head of the label, other labels were hesitant to pick up the leading lady. When discussing the effects of Gotti's money laundering charges on her career as an artist, Ashanti states:

“That was the worst part—not having a say as to what’s happening in my own life,” she says now. “To a singer, that’s like telling them they’re dying. It was tragic.”

With Ashanti being gone the past few years, other artists have taken over the spotlight and are becoming big names industry. With artists such as Rihanna and Fergie making their mark, it was hard for a hit maker such as Ashanti to dwindle behind the scenes and listen to the voices of others booming through the stereo, knowing hers was not to follow.

She admits:

“I’m not gonna play—it was hard,” she admits. “I’d hear a song on the radio and wish mine was next. But I respect a lot of the artists who’ve come along since I was out, especially Rihanna. She’s smart and she’s worked the business instead of having the business work her.”

And as if her relationship with Nelly isn't cute enough, she further describes her suave beau as "an amazing person with a big heart, who’s taught me a lot". Contrary to the rumors buzzing around numerous media outlets, the two have yet to set a wedding date let alone an engagement. While hearsay spirals announcing there are kids in the near future, Ashanti confirms such rumors as false. However if they do tie the knot she would love to have kids. To be exact :

“I want 10 kids! [...] I love my career, but to one day be a mom is more important to me than any platinum albums or awards.”

It has occurred to me and every so often has bothered me that when I've openly expressed the extent of a relationship with my dad, he always responds "you won't know him a year from now". An expected comment that often spills out your parents mouth more frequently than your young ears probably want to hear. It often minimizes our capability of being open and welcoming them into our love lives, when in return our greatest emotions are shot down and our love parades are rained on. 'Trust me, it isn't love honey' and ' don't rush, enjoy being young' are just as frequenting' when talking to an older yet wise woman. I often wonder "who are they to say it isn't love'. It is evident that they have lived this life far longer than I, but they had to start somewhere right? And their starting point had to have been 'young love' right? Henry Ward Beecher describes it as a 'flame' which I readily agree with. It's a fiery feeling of excitement, curiosity, butterflies fluttering, and commitment. To us, its a milestone, a world wonder, and a priority, so why do they downsize it? Maybe we have yet to experience the 'meet the parents' stage, or the 'off to college' experience, or the 'pregnancy slip up' to see if it would truly hold through, but you have to crawl before you walk and think before you speak right? What I mean is, before we get to those points we have to fully know our significant other and build a foundation for our relationship before the hurdles are put forth. His charming smile, outgoing personality, suave features and debonair finesse may have been what has caught your attention, but his respect for women, family, your feelings, growth and goals, alongside his ambitions, independence, intelligence, conversation capability, and maturity is what will keep you. So don't allow our wisest elders to downplay the 'light and flickering' emotion that is 'young love' because at one point they too were here and it was all they ever wanted. It's a learning experience, and if you can't learn to balance a relationship and be a 'liking' girlfriend, how will you later develop and become a 'loving' wife?

For the August 2008 Issue, David Colman of Interview Magazine sat down with actress Eva Mendes touching on celebrities and substance abuse and being a Cuban- American in the entertainment industry. I found this article particularly interesting because it's different from other articles I've posted on F&F. In Mario's interview he discussed his fight to help his mother through rehab, however, E.M herself was checked into Utah's Cirque Lodge rehabilitation center earlier this year. Often times celebrities shy away and refuse to answer such questions, whereas Eva is blunt and bold, and while she doesn't address her exact personal experience, she does address the issue amongst celebrities alike and it's heavy impact which many take jokingly and lightly

On substance abuse. . .

I’m not angry. But because celebrities’ lives are so visible, I think it
makes it look lighter than it is. I have a really good sense of humor, I’m just
very sensitive. The other day I was reading an article. I don’t even remember
who the actress was, but she’s been around for a long time. She said something
like, “I’m proud that I’ve had a whole career without making it to rehab.” I
thought, That’s such a negative twist on it. I’m proud of people who have the
determination and the fearlessness to actually go and face their demons and get
better. This is a life or death situation. Again, I’m not a spokesperson for
this, but it’s just that I want to support people for their decisions when they
do go in and get help.

Being Cuban - American

I would never call it a challenge. I think being a woman in Hollywood is a big enough challenge. It really is, man. I don't want to be one of those people who complain. But the lack of roles out there--it's unbelievable. I read a lot of scripts. I believe you've got to read one that you know you're not going to do, because you've got to educate yourself on what's out there to make the best decision for you. So it's challenging being a woman. Then there are other kinds of obstacles that come your way, but there are many times that being Latin has actually helped me, being a Cuban-American has helped me.

In previous months, fashion forecasters predicted the black liquid leggings would become a hit. With personal doubt and no intent on purchasing the item, I expected this trend to stay on one side of the fashion line: where the celebrities reign. Much to my surprise liquid leggings are still a growing trend and is still featured in magazine articles as a must have style staple. I still hesitate to try them out, seeing as they are skin tight and appear to be painted on. With curves and such, the unwanted attention on the streets is guaranteed and despite that other curvy stars strut their stuff in them, I lack the body guards to defend me. ah well.

Singer songstress Monica's new reality show 'The Single: Monica' is scheduled to air on August 5th on Peachtree TV. With shows such as "Flavor of Love" and "I Love New York" with spin offs like "Charm School" and "I Love Money", there is no telling when the next series is going to hit the lineup. Interestingly enough, the entrepreneur and Hip Hop mogul that is Sean 'Diddy' Combs, has joined in and is getting ready to pitch another series 'I want to work for Diddy'. After establishing the talented Pop, R&B and Hip Hop groups 'Dream', 'Da Band', 'Danity Kane', and 'Day 26', Diddy is opting for a new direction. While he is one powerful, driven, businessman, it takes major help to run such a dominating and growing empire. ' I want to work for Diddy' documents the competition between 13 hopefuls fighting to reserve a spot in Diddy's success as his personal assistant. I've already set my reminder for this one! Diddy is pure genius, and I'd much rather watch his ratings go up than that of Flavor Flav's or Miss New York. Premiere's Aug. 4th!

The Dark Knight

If you have yet to see 'The Dark Knight', I give you permission to put the navigation bar to better use and come back to F&F a little later. Get your tickets now! With $300 million in only 10 days, it is evidently and unmistakeably the must-see movie of the summer. As the film continues to obliterate box office records, I must admit that it lives up to the hype. While 'Batman' grossed $75.6 mil in it's second weekend reaching a domestic total of $314,245,000, 'The Dark Knight' is well on its way to surpassing this record as well as that of 'Pirates of the Caribbean' and soon after 'Shrek 2' which peaked at $400 mil in 43 days. Warner Bros. head of distribution, Dan Fellman, believes that the film can reach $400 mil in about 18 days. Doesn't surprise me one bit. While they probably don't need my help, I think I'll set up a movie date and dish out another 24 bucks at the theatre. Encore anyone?

R.I.P Heath Ledger, who did a phenomenal job playing the role of 'Joker'. His character definitely made the movie. It takes true talent to take on such a character role and become the role while making it believable. (applause)

Everywhere I go, I see another woman keeping up with whats current and gracing the streets in a long flowing maxi dress. Recently, Essence.com caught up with the R&B heart-throb Trey Songz, where he dished out his feelings on his evolution, music today, and presidential candidate Obama in a interview. After chopping off his braids, downsizing in his clothes, and expanding the direction of his music for his next album, Trey Songz' growth and maturity as not only a man but an artist is easily noted. No wonder he has girls and women alike throwing themselves at him. With his humble attitude and charming smile, he has become every teens crush as they sing along lick for lick to his Billboard charts "Trey Day" album. Respectively, with his new suave look and soulful vocals, women are beating down the door to get a piece of Songz since he has stepped into manhood. Trey Songz: I cut my hair today. Everything I do in my life I do with a do-rag [laughs]. The braids are a part of me. It's been ten years, but I am tired of them.

Songz: Initially it might be a shocker, because for the three years that I've been in the spotlight, the public has always seen me with eight braids in my head. It's probably going to be a rough transition.

Songz: I look to grow on every album. Musically, I have a soulful hip-hop edge, and I want to keep that base but also expand. I want to experiment with world music, soul, R&B, and a little bit of pop, while still keeping the essence of what I do.

ESSENCE.COM: Do you ever feel like the music today is missing something?

Songz: There is a lot of creativity and a lot of music of substance that doesn't get heard. I'd say it's more about what's missing from mainstream music. [The industry] wants a record that will stay in people's heads. If a song like Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" came out today, it would never get played. Everything has its place. R&B [is mostly] about love. Rappers talk about clubs. So you're either loving, having sex or in the club. I mean, Lil Wayne speaks about Al Sharpton on his new album but what's the single? "Lollipop." I dig people that try to get [a message] out. But everyone has to compromise a little piece of creativity to get a hit.

After searching and searching to get my hands on my very own copy of the historic July 2008 issue of Italian Vogue, I came up short and to no avail found a copy. Everywhere in NYC is sold out or they never carried it. Maybe being a newcomer to the city, I didn't check the appropriate places, but ah well. So, I made my way to my last and final resort, EBAY! Now of course I had to pay a ridiculous price, but this is a once in a lifetime affair. Plus, to satisfy my model madness it is only expected that I have this issue. So, if you guys were out of luck like yours truly, browse over to ebay and get one. Yup, mine cost me $40, but hey it's an investment. Those ebay sellers are quite the hustlers, with over 20 magazines up for grabs from one single seller alone. Lucky suckers! That's where all the issues went, eh?

Trend: Man-bags?

As celebs are deemed to be the roadrunners in the fashion world, it is easy to see why so many admirers attempt to jump on the bandwagon and scramble out to purchase their rendition of the looks gracing the red carpet. While women are generally found sporting a masculine look with a twist, such as dress suits and fedora's, in today's fashion frenzy the tables have turned. Amongst celebs and fans alike, men have been spotted toting around over sized handbags. My initial reaction to the trend is pretty uneasy. I'm not too sure how I'd feel if my man walked around sporting a tote that was not only bigger than mine, but cuter. He'd definitely have to call in reinforcement because we'd have a problem. However, when a celebrity does it, there's just something about their swagger, arrogance, confidence and attitude that makes it acceptable. Like Pharrell for instance. . .

With his driven attitude and crazy fashion sense consistently on the rise and firmly represented and supported, who can question whether or not what he rocks is hot? I wouldn't. While it's hard for some dudes to rock a fitted properly, jeans that rest anywhere above their knees, and tee's with appropriate sizes, Pharrell's style is above and beyond the fad's. I applaud him for being brave, going against the odds and looking damn good while doing it. To be exact, Pharrell shamelessly lugs around a customized "Haut a Courroie" purple croc Hermes travel bag which he had handmade in a Paris shop.

In his interview with Paper mag, he comments:

"Don't call it a purse [...] its not a man purse. It's my travel bag"

Even Hip Hop's self-acclaimed "Louis Vuitton Don" has been seen in ads with a metallic LV bag in hand, not losing an ounce of street credibilty let alone a drip of masculinity.

Kanye's set to team up with LV as well as Takashi Murakami to launch his very own men's shoe line with hopes of also branching out for a women's shoe collection.

He, too, made a statement about his bag and style speaking with Guardian paper . . .

"I'm here for Louis. I grew up with the Louis look, you know. I just love the style"

. . .So, what do you think? Think it's a fashion do or don't?

Teen Vogue Event: Fashion University

Teen Vogue is hosting their "Teen Vogue Fashion University" featuring some of the best in the business including fashion designer Phillip Lim, Maybelline New York makeup artist Chuck Hezekiah, and so much more. Over this weekend long fashion spectacular, you will be able to choose the classes you want, meet fashion "who's who" and learn what it takes to succeed in the growing fashion business.

Loving the Lashes

Luckily, I was gifted with long lashes. A little mascara, just about any brand from the local drugstore to cosmetic counters, with a couple of sweeps of the wand and I'm off to bat my lashes and shyly accept compliments. However, batting your lashes becomes quite the dread for many women who are falling short in the lashes depot. Well, don't fret Ladies, in 2008, there's a quick fix for just about everything (and this one is much less pricier than plastic surgery). Desperately needing falsies to make your eyes pop? Who better to submit a recommendation and personal testimony than Ms. Kim K.??

Day Dreaming about Demps

Ladies, Ladies, Ladies. As if his baby picture wasn't cute enough, these pics should be printed out, snipped to size and taped over that picture of your man in your wallet. Lucky for me I have an empty slot ; ).

While many girls fancy the basketball build and the NBA all star, I've always preferred the football/ teddy bear build. Id say 200+ pounds? The dimpled Demps stands 6ft. tall, packing 208 pounds of delicious! As you can see, the 28 year-old Houston Texans safety can be seen on and off the field showcasing his talent and sex appeal. I know you guys have checked him out playing the role of Letoya's man in her debut single "Torn". Mhm, that's him, and I'm still staring googly eyed as I rewind the two year old video.

**It's been a while since I posted celebrities that have caught my attention with their fashion sense. So here's two barbie dolls for ya!

Amerie's promo pic looks adorable. From the tri-colored frames, to her octagon-shaped earrings, silver rope chain, and hot pink sweater, chicks looking funky. She's always had a sexy glamorized look, but here she looks much more youthful and mod. Thumbs up on the promo pic, look out for her new single to hit your local radio stations.

Oh, Tia! Check you out stealing all of the spotlight and proving to be the more fashionable sister. While in her earlier sitcom years she played the role as the book smart twin, with a hit show on the CW "The Game" she has definitely turned the style dial up and plays the role of NFL girlfriend and med-school fashionista. From her smokey eye look to her navy blue satin shoes, Tia's style is on the rise and unmistakably the twin to look out for.

Teen Vogue Update!!

Well, it didn't take long for this update, eh? The whole experience was remarkable. Stepping out of the subway and looking up at the Conde Nast building was breathtaking. Not that it stands any higher or more lit up than it's neighboring buildings, but just the knowledge that this could be my future office was absolutely nerve wrecking. As I repeatedly practiced my firm handshake and memorized questions I wanted to ask the beauty director, Eva Chen, I click-clacked into the building and made my way up to the ninth floor. Just being in the atmosphere and surrounded by the crazy fashion sense on the elevator was enough to blog about already! While waiting to be called in by Eva, my blogging buddy Connie (from my Meet,Greet, & Arepas post) strolled by and noticed me waiting. She came out, skimmed through my portfolio and gave me some words of encouragement. After all, she is the reason I scheduled this interview.

Meeting with Eva was a-ma-zing! I learned sooo much! If just the interview provided me with such an abundance of tips and key points, imagine what spending a semester interning would provide me with! Eva expressed her love for beauty which she discovered as an intern at Harper's Bazaar, her must-have beauty products that are SPF products (sunblock, hand sanitizer) alongside lip balm & gloss, as well as what it's like to be an intern for the beauty department. I'm sure the excitement gleamed through my eyes and mouth as I smiled from ear to ear as she took me through a spin of what I consider to be my dream job! Simultaneously, I was able to interview for the Fall 08 Beauty Intern position with Beauty Assistant Maura Lynch!
Couldn't have asked for a better interview! It felt more like a conversation about common interests and experience. The nerves were left at the front door and I was able to be myself. I am blessed!

*I'm sure some of you are wondering how to get started yourselves, correct? Well here are a couple of tips I have gathered along the way!

1. Start a blog - starting a blog allows you to begin writing creatively while achieving a voice and your own writing style. It is one thing for you to enjoy your writing and for others to become interested and enjoy reading what you have to say.

2. Portfolio/Clippings - Similar to your resume, clippings of your writing will show your writing skills and techniques. Start with a school magazine, newspaper or yearbook. Any and every opportunity for you to write something that is published is good for your resume as well as providing hard copies to bring in on interviews for interviewers to read through.

3. Research - Browse through websites. There are so many different resources out there that will give you a heads up on who's hiring, how to afford housing while doing unpaid internships, and ways to prepare for interviews. Start with http://www.ed2010.com/!

4. Network - As you read with one of my early posts. I met up with Connie from Teen Vogue just to learn more about the magazine industry and what interns assist with. Meeting Connie, is probably what allowed me to jump start my summer. all of her helpful tips, suggestions and contacts helped me to begin steps 1 - 3. Definitely network. Ask questions. Read the blogs of other writers. Also check out the Teen Vogue Intern Blog!

5. Applying - Be sure to have an updated, error-free resume! Your resume is your ticket in. Make sure all of your experiences are highlighted in order to attract the attention of the company by showcasing your versatility and strengths. Accompany your resume with an original cover letter which shows why you are applying, why you would be good for the job while elaborating on certain key aspects presented on your resume. Be personable and edgy, all the while showing professionalism and your ability to write.

6. Dress the part - Depending on where you interview, your outfit can be another way to show you mean business. Applying for a creative job? Fashion focused job? Corporate job? The November 2007 issue of Teen Vogue, which I found extremely helpful says:

Creative Job: funky print tops, rock a leather jacket in place of a traditional blazer, denim that makes a statement (preferably without holes)

Fashion-Focused Job: Killer shoes, anything unique that shows your personality, important accessories

Corporate Job: Preppy chic, ballet flats, mismatched suits

Wondering what I wore, huh? Would have been helpful to have taken a shot while I was dressed in my "modern geisha" look as I sported a high loose bun, summer-ready makeup, dress shirt and trendy belt, but hey heres some items shots.

Lastly, the interview! -Be prepared and confident! Sell yourself. Be down to earth, be you! Show them personality, edge, and youth. Individualism, work ethic, and a desire to learn something new will take you far.

Sorry for the hiatus and lack of posts there of, I have been getting ready for my informative interview with TEEN VOGUE!! After searching for the perfect outfit, sprucing up the tidbits on my resume, collecting copies of the F&F posts and polishing up my portfolio, I think that I am ready to give it a go. While I may not be the most experienced in 4 Times Sq, I can hold a conversation and speak in a very articulate and orate manner. You must be able to sell yourself by highlighting your skills and abilities (great qualities to strengthen what may appear to be a weakness, but in all actuality a work in progress - sounds better). So, my sincerest apologies for making you comment on old posts!!

Oh, Home Sweet City: My NYC Update

Needless to say, with all moves, it can be a little unsettling and nerve-wrecking to venture out on your own for the first time. The absence of friends, family so close to home, and a long distance relationship took its toll on me the first two weeks and ultimately pushed me to want to go home and to be saddened daily. In my post "Not So Glamorous", I introduced the side of Ms. Elise that was fearful, not adventurous and ready to pack up and head back to my comfort zone in Boston. I felt like making friends was out the question, and my days would consist of going to work and returning back home again. However, I woke up and realized that this is an opportunity of a lifetime girl, so LIVE it up, ENJOY yourself, HAVE something to blog and brag to your friends about. From that day forward whether its been doing the solo thing, meeting up with a girlie, a Q.U. cutie, or laughing it up with "M&M" for the day, I've been smiling nonstop and enjoying myself. From Times Square, to shopping malls, to a horse & carriage ride through Times Square, I have vowed to pick and choose the things I want to do and actually get up and do them. To start off, I felt like the summer couldn't go any slower. I remember my days feeling as if they lingered on forever. Now I feel like the calendar is slipping away, and it's about time for me to get on the ball. I'm a city girl and being in NYC is the perfect resort for me. I came in a little sheltered (but not too much) and a little skeptical, but now I have tougher skin and feel the independence I have gained. Now when I get off the bus from Boston, I sigh with relief versus depression and happily exclaim "oh, home sweet city!". I'm glad I not only made the decision to come, but to stay. When the summer's coming to a close and I pack and turn in my key, I will not say "bye", but "I'll see you soon". For I will have become not yet a year older but ten weeks smarter, wiser, and stronger.

Fatherhood

For the latest and the greatest in magazine articles, definitely pick up the latest issue of Essence Magazine. Gracing the cover is none other than the handsome and sexiness that is Usher and his beautiful son Usher Raymond V. Its nice to see a conversation that treasures and represents a topic that many men either try to refrain from having or completely ignore; one of feelings and responsibility. In this no holds barred interview, Usher openly discusses the challenges and wonders he experienced growing up without a father figure present in his life. He also touches upon the married life, the responsibilities that men have as a husband and a father, and how both have changed and shaped his life. Just to give you fabulous readers a glimpse of the article to get you up and running to the closest Essence magazine carrier, here's one question/answer that i found particularly note worthy.

HARPER: What would you say to young men and women about what they should expect from a man who's a father? What is living right as a father? How do you define that? How would that man look?

USHER: That man would accept his responsibilities as a father, regardless of whether he was with the mother of the child. Men will leave a situation for several reasons. One, it's not comfortable. It may be violent. The two of you may grow apart. But you should never abandon that responsibility, which is to be there, reading with your child, being supportive of your child's growth. That is communicating. That is making the choice to put your child before your own vanity.
